This work is from an edition of two plus two artist's proofs and it was made between 1971 and 1972. It is the model for a larger bronze and steel sculpture, dated 1972-1975 and commissioned by Giorgio Mondadori for the Mondadori Palace in Segrate, the new headquarters of the publishing house, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and placed near Milan. The large Pomodoro work of art is standing to this day in its original position, that is in the middle of the artificial lake that surrounds the building. One of the two artist's proof was sold at Christie's London in 2016.
