A Six Panel Screen

Japan, Edo Period, first half of 19th Century
Large and important Byobu screen with six folding panels. On its surface, made of gold leaf on paper to simulate a game of golden clouds, there are portrayed in ink and tempera, three red headed Japanese cranes (tanchozuru) standing on the banks of a pond that hosts some turtles.
On the left side of the panel, a Japanese pine tree stands in a bamboo grove with peony flowers and a woven broom fence. Little scratchs on front and back
