A cherrywood veneered mandolin

Florence, Pilade Maurri 1920
missing strings, inside it bears the cartouche "Pilade Maurri - Fabbricante di strumenti armonici - Firenze - Piazza Santa Croce n° 6 - Anno 1920"
length 69 cm
Pilade Maurri, together with his brother Raffaello, opened a shop specializing in music publishing and a company for the construction of mandolins, mandolas and guitars in Florence. The cartouches of the R. Maurri mandolins show the existence of a shop in Via delle Farine and a workshop in Piazza S. Croce. The Maurri company printed a vast catalog of music for plectrum instruments, which today constitutes the Maurri Collection. The Maurri factory was then taken over by Carlo Schmidl in 1923. It is hypothesized that the invention of the so-called Tuscan mandolin is attributed to the Maurri luthiers.
