Plasticatore fiorentino dell'inizio del XVIII secolo

Gian Gastone de' Medici

oval painted stucco high-relief, some defects
cm 84x69
The following technical sheet of the work was created by Professor Sandro Bellesi as part of the inventory of the paintings of the Fattoria Franceschini. This work depicting Gian Gastone together with the portrait of Ferdinando, included in a once certainly larger series dedicated to Medici grand dukes and princes today reduced to five specimens, distinctly represent the two sons of Cosimo III de 'Medici and Marguerite Louise d'Orléans. The works, one of which today lacks its original frame, differ from the other pieces currently included in the series, due to the frontal and non-profile arrangement of the characters and the fact that they are depicted up to a little more than half-length. Although not currently attributable to a specific sculptural workshop active in Florence in the early eighteenth century, we do not exclude, for the two portraits, a probable contact with Antonio Montauti, author among other works of stucco compositions depicting historical characters.
