Mary Magdalene

Florence, second half of 17th century
oil on canvas, framed, some defects
cm 74x58,5
The following technical sheet of the work was created by Professor Sandro Bellesi as part of the inventory of the paintings of the Fattoria Franceschini. The work, in a mediocre state of conservation, depicts, as a tradition in artistic images, Saint Mary Magdalene with her most common iconographic attributes, namely, the crucifix, the jar of ointments and the human skull. Symbols of the saint's renunciation of the vanity of earthly goods, these are carefully described in a woman's hand and on a table placed in front of her. The canvas, part of a series of paintings depicting saints by different authors, appears to be assignable to the school of Simone Pignoni, artistic heir to the great Francesco Furini, author of works with highly burnished effects characterized by figures pervaded mostly by languor and sensuality. Although not assignable to Pignoni, this could be made in his atelier by some pupils, perhaps Giovanni Perini or Gian Camillo Ciabilli.
