Furniture and Paintings from the Ancient Fattoria Franceschini, partly from Villa I Pitti

Lot N. 172

Scuola fiorentina della fine del XVI secolo

Portrait of a cardinal

oil on canvas, framed, few defects
cm 84x55
The wooden passepartout is laid on canvas.
The following technical sheet of the work was created by Professor Sandro Bellesi as part of the inventory of the paintings of the Fattoria Franceschini.
The work, in an excellent state of conservation beyond the blurring of the protective patina due to the passage of time, presents within a neutral space apparently devoid of depth, the half-length of a cardinal currently unidentifiable due to the lack of indications or appropriate iconographic comparisons with well-known personalities. The strong Florentine imprint linked to the typological and stylistic language of painters active at the end of the sixteenth century in the Tuscan capital, in particular Giovanni Stradano and Alessandro Allori, allows us to place the dating of this oval at the end of the same century.
