Pair of Tianhuang stone seals
China, Qing dynasty
surmounted by a Buddhist lion carved in the round, square in shape, both contained in an original protective paper case
One bears the inscriptions "wu xu er yue shi lin jin zhuan" (in February of the year of Wu Xu, carefully engraved by Shi Lin) and "wei xing suo zhai" (inhabiting the spirit); the other "dong ou chuan jiu su, feng ri jiang bian (hao)" (Dong Ou carries forward the old traditional customs, with a bright breeze and a beautiful riverside) and "qian shen xiang ma jiu fang gao" (in a previous life I was Jiu Fang Gao), in reference to Jiu Fang Gao, who lived in the 1st millennium BC. and known for his ability to know horses; the inscription is therefore a metaphor on knowing how to recognize the essence of things)
