Giovanni Battista Pittoni
(1687 - 1767)

Annibale giura odio ai romani

oil on canvas, framed, with pictorial restoration visible in the upper right corner and other minor defects
43.5x74.5 cm
On the reverse it bears four circular stamps, one of which with a date that is not clearly legible. The proposed work is an autograph painting by Giovanni Battista Pittoni, formerly in a private Parisian collection, published as such by Franca Zava Boccazzi in her monograph on the great eighteenth-century Venetian painter (Giambattista Pittoni. L'opera completo, Electa, Milan 1979, no. 147, figs 77, 82) and of which there is a photo at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence listed under the number 114699. The subject was repeated several times by Pittoni. Other versions are in fact preserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. This version differs from the others, which share the high quality, for the different position of the dog in the foreground. The work can be viewed at our headquarters in Corso Italia 6 in Florence and will be picked up there
