Lot N. 101

Ritual silver salt shaker

Moscow, 1879
made like a small throne placed on a cylindrical container with a saucer-shaped base with a trompe-l'oeil lace doily; combined with a pair of snot extinguishing scissors and a service bell
360 g (3)
Russian tradition required that the salt shaker was placed at the entrance of the house as a sign of welcome for the guest, who was invited to dip a small piece of bread (which was in the container below) in the salt. The back of the throne evoked the shape of the typical isba, with the tracery symbolizing the windows; for this reason it was also given to young married couples as a symbol of good luck. Lot to retire in an apartment in the Campo di Marte area.
